Clinical Conversations #6: Strabismus Surgery 101

Orthoptists play a pivotal role in the assessment and surgical management of patients with strabismus. From detailed pre-operative measurements and assessment of motility, control and binocular function, through to post-operative evaluation, their clinical findings are integral to surgical decision-making.
This practical, case-based session will provide an overview of the fundamentals of strabismus surgery from a surgeon’s perspective. We will explore the principles behind common procedures (including recession, resection , myectomy and transposition) and, importantly, how and why a surgeon chooses between them.
The aim is not simply to understand what operation is being performed, but why. By exploring the clinical reasoning behind surgical choices, this session will provide orthoptists with greater insight into the surgeon’s decision-making process and highlight how their pre-operative assessment can directly influence the surgical plan.
