Intravitreal injections are an effective treatment for certain retinal conditions including wet age-related macula degeneration (AMD). Treatment allows for the preservation of vision.  

Intravitreal injections (IVIs) work for conditions that cause fluid leakage or abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina. This can include conditions such as, wet AMD, diabetic macula oedema and retinal vein occlusion.  

IVIs work by blocking a substance called VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which is what causes abnormal blood vessels to grow and leak under the retina. The medication also helps decrease fluid and swelling in the retina. Both actions allow for slowing of disease progress and stabilisation/improvement of vision.  

IVIs are performed at iSight Specialists in our on-site treatment room. The procedure takes only a few minutes. It will involve numbing drops to keep the eye comfortable, cleaning the eye and surrounding area and then a fine needle is used to deliver the medication into the eye. Pressure might be experienced but no pain. Overall, the discomfort is usually minimal. After your procedure, we will go through some post-injection information.  

The number and frequency of repeat injections depends on how the eye responds to treatment, the type of drug used and the condition being treated.
