Pterygium is the benign, fleshy over-growth of the conjunctiva (clear tissue on the white part of the eye) that grows onto and across the clear part of the eye (cornea). Pterygiums are commonly associated with UV exposure, windy environments and age. 

Pterygiums can cause discomfort and irritation and can affect vision if it encroaches across the visual axis (in front of the pupil).  

If vision is unaffected, conservative management options such as lubricating eye drops or ointments can be used to relieve discomfort. Additionally, if the pterygium becomes inflamed, a short course of topical steroids can be commenced. Surgery will be considered only if vision is affected. Surgery has very low recurrence rate.
