Dr Deepa Taranath is a highly accomplished paediatric ophthalmologist and eye surgeon, specializing in the field of strabismus, paediatric and general ophthalmology, and cataract surgery.

Dr Taranath obtained her medical degree from MAHE University in India, followed by specialised training in ophthalmology at Rajiv Gandhi University. She subsequently completed a prestigious fellowship in 2003-4 in paediatric ophthalmology at Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney, formerly known as the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. Currently, Dr Taranath is recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO). 

She is the current Deputy Head of Unit (Ophthalmology) in Flinders Medical Centre where she serves her public appointment. She is the current chair of the Australia and New Zealand Strabismus Society (ANZSS)  which is a special interest group (SIG) under RANZCO. 

With over half of her clinical and surgical workload dedicated to paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, Dr Taranath possesses extensive experience and a profound dedication to promoting vision and achieving optimal eye alignment for her patients’ overall well-being. Her expertise extends to the screening and management of premature babies at Flinders Medical Centre, where she plays a supervisory role in the screening program and management of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

Dr Taranath holds a particular interest in genetic eye disorders and serves as a founding member of the interdisciplinary Ocular Genetics Clinic at Flinders Medical Centre. In this capacity, she collaborates closely with clinical geneticists to diagnose, manage, and provide counselling for families affected by inherited eye disorders. Dr Taranath also currently serves as a senior staff specialist in the ophthalmology department at Flinders Medical Centre, where she actively participates in the training and mentorship of registrars and fellows both in clinical settings and the operating theatre. She also holds the position of senior lecturer in the renowned medicine program at Flinders University, where she has contributed to the training of optometry and medical students. 

Her expertise has been widely recognized through numerous publications in esteemed peer-reviewed journals. Futhermore, Dr Taranath has been invited to speak, chair, and organise sessions at numerous national and international conferences across the globe.

Driven with strong ambition and passion, Dr Deepa Taranath is dedicated to fostering honest communication and collaborating closely with general practitioners, optometrists, orthoptists, and other specialists to deliver comprehensive patient care. She consistently offers recommendations for tertiary support services, such as early intervention groups or low vision support services, to ensure the enhance quality of life and provide the best possible outcomes for her patients.
